Non-Profits
Alexandria boasts a vibrant and caring local nonprofit community while serving as home to the headquarters of many larger national nonprofits. National nonprofits headquartered in Alexandria include but are not limited to United Way Worldwide, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and Good 360. These organizations have found the ambience of Alexandria coupled with the proximity to Washington to be the perfect combination for addressing the goals of their organizations.
On the local level, a variety of nonprofits have developed and flourished over the years to support local causes, fill gaps in services and assist those most in need in our community. From Hopkins House, which provides preschool education for low income families and was founded in 1939 to ACT for Alexandria, Alexandria's Community Foundation founded in 2004, Alexandrians have continuously "stepped up" to assist others in our community who find themselves in less than desirable situations.
ALIVE!, Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically, was founded in the late 1960s and flourishes today addressing the issues of hunger, housing and early childhood development.
The Art League and Alexandria Symphony provide support for the arts and help to make our community a better place for all.
