New Visit Alexandria Initiative Aims to Bring

Medical Meetings to the City

Program on April 7 Offers Specialized Healthcare Compliance Training for Meeting Planners and Suppliers

Alexandria, Va. – Following a national trend in the meetings industry, Visit Alexandria’s latest initiative aims to expand its “Meetings Made Extraordinary” campaign to the healthcare industry. According to Meeting Professionals International (MPI), healthcare meetings and events are the fastest growing market segment, totaling nearly 25 percent of the industry with one million medical meetings projected for the U.S. this year. The potential economic impact for Alexandria is immense, with cities such as San Diego which had 15 healthcare meetings in 2014 reporting $425 million in economic impact for that year.

Visit Alexandria’s efforts to become a friendly destination to the medical meetings industry includes offering specialized training to meeting planners and suppliers interested in earning MPI’s Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate (HMCC). The training will be held Thursday, April 7, 2016 at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town and will feature Pat Schaumann, CMP, CSEP, DMCP, HMCC, Director of Professional Development for the Healthcare Sector of MPI Academy, presenting on compliance regulations, reporting requirements and techniques for managing healthcare meetings. Registration is $399 and includes lunch followed by a tour of Alexandria hotels and a reception and graduation ceremony at Hotel Monaco.

“Alexandria is the perfect destination for those small to midsize healthcare meetings looking for a new destination,” said Jacqueline Beaulieu, HMCC, Executive Director of Healthcare Education & Events at BlueHive in Worcester, Massachusetts. “The history of Alexandria alone is fascinating and lends itself to having a memorable meeting, but the location—smack dab in the middle of pharma alley on the East Coast and home to the highest number of healthcare associations in the surrounding area—now that is a conversation starter.”

Medicine and History Appeal

With its rich history of medicine, its overall meeting destination appeal and its knowledge of healthcare regulations, Alexandria, Virginia welcomes medical meetings and is proud to be among the first small cities in the country providing HMCC training opportunities for local event planners and suppliers. Alexandria boasts the award-winning Inova Alexandria Hospital, more than 50 healthcare associations and, in 2017, will become home to the National Science Foundation’s headquarters.

Experiences and event spaces include:

  • Tours inspired by MERCY STREET, PBS’ national medical drama inspired by real events of Civil War Alexandria
  • Historic Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum displays medical products as they were from 1805 until 1933, perfect for tours and small receptions
  • The Lyceum, a former Civil War hospital, now Alexandria’s history museum, with a room for lectures
  • A visit to the National Inventors Hall of Fame, located in the U.S. Patent and Trade Office’s headquarters and featuring stories of the world's greatest patented innovations
  • United Way Worldwide headquarters, with health as one of its key pillars, offers meeting space and an outdoor patio with Potomac River views

Small to Midsize Meeting Appeal

  • Only five miles from Washington, DC and located along the scenic Potomac waterfront

“Healthcare meeting professionals must balance unprecedented changes and demands on understanding the global impact of healthcare compliance,” said Schaumann. “They must tackle tough regulations, adjust and readjust priorities while keeping one eye on the short term and the other on long-term survival—a tough job without a continuing flow of knowledge. It is imperative to stay educated on globally regulatory topics through opportunities such as earning your HMCC.”
