Alexandria, VA - "Shop small" on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday in the region's biggest destination for independent boutiques - Alexandria, Virginia. Alexandria's Small is the New Black campaign returns this year, highlighting promotions and events slated to take place on Black Friday (Nov. 28) and Small Business Saturday (Nov. 29). A new holiday surprise is the Scottie Dog Prize Hunt, taking place the week leading up to Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, with clues shared on Visit Alexandria's social media channels.

Alexandria invites holiday shoppers to the Washington, DC area's "shop small" headquarters to enjoy an alternative shopping experience - brimming with holiday cheer, deals and unique finds in local boutiques nestled in a picturesque historic backdrop. 80% of the shops and restaurants on King Street (in Old Town) and on Mount Vernon Avenue (in Del Ray) are independently owned.

BLACK FRIDAY ALEXANDRIA: 6 a.m. Sales and Free Parking
In its fifth year, Black Friday Alexandria returns Friday, November 28th, with over 50 independent boutiques opening early to kick off the shopping season with one-of-a-kind shopping deals on designer and coveted merchandise, including home décor, chic fashions, gourmet food, classic toys and gifts for dogs. Most participating stores will open at 6 a.m. offering 30% discounts from 6 to 8 a.m., 20% from 8 to 10 a.m., and 10% starting at 10 a.m. Store offers may vary. A variety of participating shops include The Shoe Hive, Fibre Space, The Dog Park, The Christmas Attic, Coco Blanca, Olio Tasting Room, Hooray for Books, Kiskadee, Del Ray Variety, Imagine Artwear and Bellacara. Participating eateries will open early to satisfy shoppers' hunger pains. The 800 block of King Street will host a free coffee and donut bar on the city sidewalks.

The City of Alexandria is offering free parking at parking meters and in all city-owned garages and parking lots as a special incentive for shoppers on Black Friday. The Free King Street Trolley will begin operating at 6 a.m. so shoppers can bag even more bargains.

After the shopping is done, stay for the popular City of Alexandria Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6 p.m. on the historic Market Square. As the official kick-off to the holiday season in Alexandria, the ceremony includes live entertainment, a special visit from Santa Claus, and community caroling.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY: Alexandria Deals and Activities
Head to the DC region's "shop small" headquarters for Small Business Saturday on November 29th. More than 30 independent Alexandria boutiques will offer special promotions, such as merchandise discounts, gifts with purchase, complimentary services, treats, and/or festive activities for shoppers to enjoy. Participants include La Cuisine, Bishop Boutique, The Christmas Attic and Pink & Brown Organic & Trendy Children's Boutique. Alexandria was recently selected as one of three cities, alongside San Francisco and New York, for the "Shop Small" street banner program, encouraging shoppers to "Find Something Extraordinary" this holiday season. The street lamp banners appear along King Street and Mount Vernon Avenue, the city's two largest retail corridors, where 80% of the retailers and restaurants are independently or regionally owned. Holiday shoppers will be rewarded for their "shop local" loyalty. Starting on Small Business Saturday, November 29, shoppers may get a free Rebecca Minkoff designer "Shop Small" canvas tote bag when they bring two receipts from local Alexandria shops to the Alexandria Visitors Center, 221 King Street-one bag per customer while supplies last.

NEW: Scottie Dog Prize Hunt
The week leading up to Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, Visit Alexandria will hide 20 black stuffed animal Scottie dogs throughout Old Town and Del Ray. Each dog will have a prize attached to it for the individual to enjoy (such as a gift certificate to a local restaurant, a boutique, or attraction tickets). Follow Visit Alexandria's social media channels to find clues of where the dogs are hidden. Individuals participating in the hunt are encouraged to hashtag #ALXscottie and #ExtraordinaryALX.
