This building was once home to Franklin and Armfield, one of the largest dealers in the domestic slave trade, and enslaved people were held here and in an adjacent yard. During the Civil War, Union soldiers visited the slave pen to see the manacles, chains and iron doors for themselves, and it was sometimes used as a jail to hold drunk soldiers and deserters. Today, the Freedom House Museum interprets the site’s slavery history.
