For two decades before the Civil War, The Lyceum, built in 1839, was the intellectual and cultural center of Alexandria. Like many churches and other large structures in town, this building was seized by the Union in 1861 and used as a hospital. Now Alexandria’s History Museum, The Lyceum is home to a permanent exhibition that includes “An Occupied City: The Civil War Years,” which shows the tremendously disruptive impact of the war on Alexandria.
