Because of the heavy Union presence in Alexandria, archaeologists have discovered a rich buried Civil War history, documenting important features, like a Crimean oven in a former camp, and recovering artifacts associated with soldiers, like leather boots, musket parts, saddle shields and bridle rosettes, epaulets, pocketknives, bullets, buttons, knapsack hooks, and a Confederate soldier’s trunk plate. Many of these are on display in the museum, which offers family programs, lectures and excavation site activities.
