George Washington and Robert E. Lee had worshipped at Christ Church, an English country style church completed in 1773. Christ Church attracted many Union soldiers stationed around Alexandria who wanted to see Washington’s church. Unlike other churches in Alexandria, it was not used as a hospital and the interior was preserved, likely out of respect for Washington. Today both Washington’s and Lee’s pews have plaques, and a churchyard memorial honors 34 Confederates buried there.
