George Washington gave the estate to his adopted granddaughter and his nephew as a wedding gift. Dr. William Thornton, first architect of the U.S. Capitol, was then commissioned to design the mansion. During the Civil War, Woodlawn's diverse residents found themselves trapped between the Confederate line at Manassas and Union occupied Alexandria, VA. These northern sympathizers were surrounded by southern sympathizers for the duration of the war.
Guided Tours are offered Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, from 12pm-4pm; tours leave at the top of every hour. Site is closed December 9-February 28.
