Metrorail Directions

Alexandria is accessible by four Metrorail stations:

  • King St-Old Town (for Old Town Alexandria)
  • Braddock Road (for Del Ray)
  • Eisenhower Ave
  • Van Dorn Street
     

Access Alexandria on both the blue and yellow Metrorail lines:
 

From Washington, DC and Arlington to Old Town

  • Blue line: Take the blue line train going toward Franconia-Springfield and exit at the King St-Old Town station.
  • Yellow line: Take the yellow line train going toward Huntington and exit at the King St-Old Town station.
     

From Alexandria of Fairfax County northbound to Old Town

  • Blue line: Take the blue line train toward Largo Town Center and exit at the King St-Old Town station. 
  • Yellow line: Take the yellow line train toward Ft. Totten and exit at the King St-Old Town station.
     

Once at the King St-Old Town Metrorail station, a host of transportation options will greet you: 

  • Hop on the Free King Street Trolley going toward the Waterfront; the trolley makes stops every two blocks until its final destination, and after, will circle back up to the King St-Old Town Metrorail station.
  • Rent a bike from the Capital Bikeshare station, located on Diagonal Road in Old Town Alexandria or at the Braddock Road Metrorail station. One- or three-day passes are available at each station, allowing you to drop off and pick up bikes for as many rides as needed. 
  • Take a walk! The Potomac waterfront is located only one mile from the King St-Old Town Metrorail station and with the city bustle and historic architecture, your walk becomes a brisk, sightseeing stroll.
     

Driving Directions

From DC:

Four bridges connect Washington, DC to Northern Virginia. From Downtown DC, use the 14th Street Bridge (Route 1/Route 395), the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge (Route 50/Route 66), or the Arlington Memorial Bridge and follow signs to take the George Washington Memorial Parkway headed South. From Georgetown, use the Key Bridge and get on the George Washington Memorial Parkway headed South.

The parkway offers scenic views of the Potomac River and the Washington Monument. It becomes Washington Street in Alexandria and will take you through Old Town.

From National Harbor (Oxon Hill, MD - South of DC):

Take the Wilson Bridge (Route 495) West and take exit 177B to Route 1 headed North (it's the first exit across the river). Turn right on King Street for Old Town Alexandria. There is also a water taxi running between the Alexandria waterfront and National Harbor.

From New York City and New England:

Take I-95 S to New Jersey Turnpike South (toll). Then take 40 West to I-95 S. Keep right onto I-895 S as you approach Baltimore, and then take Exit 4 to 295 S. Follow 295 S all the way to Exit 1 C towards I-495 S/I-95 S. Cross the Wilson Bridge and soon take exit 177B-177C on right, and then exit 177B to merge onto U.S. 1 N in Alexandria.

From Philadelphia:

Take I-95 S. Keep right onto I-895 S as you approach Baltimore, and then take Exit 4 to 295 S. Follow 295 S all the way to Exit 1C towards I-495 S/I-95 S. Cross the Wilson Bridge and soon take exit 177B-177C on right, and then exit 177B to merge onto U.S. 1 N in Alexandria.

From Baltimore:

Take 295 S all the way to Exit 1C towards I-495 S/I-95 S. Cross the Wilson Bridge and soon take exit 177B-177C on right, and then exit 177B on left to merge onto U.S. 1 N in Alexandria.

From Annapolis/Chesapeake Bay:

Take US-50 W to Exit 7A for I-495 S/ I-95 S. Take exit 177B-177C on right, and then exit 177B on left to merge onto U.S. 1 N in Alexandria.

From Richmond:

Follow I-95 N to Exit 177A-B on right for U.S. 1. Take Exit 177B on left to merge onto U.S. 1 N in Alexandria.

From Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Newport News:

Follow I-64 W to exit 200, and then stay right onto I-295 N. Take Exit 43A to I-95N. Follow I-95 N to Exit 177A-B on right for U.S. 1. Take Exit 177B on left to merge onto U.S. 1 N in Alexandria.

To Washington, DC:

From Old Town Alexandria, head North on Washington Street. Continue onto the George Washington Memorial Parkway. There are two options to reach downtown DC: the 14th Street Bridge (take the right exit for 395 North toward Washington) and the Arlington Memorial Bridge (take the left exit for Route 50 West/Memorial Bridge, cross the bridge, and follow signs for Constitution Avenue/Route 50).

To National Harbor:

From Old Town Alexandria, head south on Patrick Street/Route 1. Take the ramp to Routes 495/95, following signs for 495 East to take the Wilson Bridge across the river. Take the first exit on the right, exit 2A toward National Harbor Boulevard.

Driving tips:

If possible, avoid driving on major roads during rush hour (8-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. on weekdays).

Be aware that the most important east-west highway in Northern Virginia, I-66, is HOV-only (that means a minimum of 2 people in each car) inside the 495 Beltway for all lanes during rush hour. Check here for more details about HOV rules on Northern Virginia highways.
