Alexandria Launches Hybrid King Street Trolleys April 22

Economic Development Engine is Environmentally Friendly
with Improved Rider Amenities

Alexandria, VA - Alexandria's popular Free King Street Trolley service gets clean and green with the launch of an all-new fleet of hybrid trolleys on April 22, 2012. Owned by the City of the Alexandria and operated by Alexandria Transit Company's DASH system, the clean diesel hybrid electric trolleys consume less fuel, emit fewer pollutants, and will require less maintenance. Riders will notice new design features including bike racks, low floor design (no steps), wheelchair ramp instead of a hydraulic lift for easier access, plus a smoother ride, quicker acceleration, reduced engine noise and a more spacious and accessible interior.

The City purchased the five new trolleys with American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) Stimulus funds. In pursuing these funds, the City demonstrates its ongoing commitment and investment in infrastructure to drive visitor spending in the City.

On a trolley rider survey conducted March 22 to April 4, 2012, 72% of the respondents stated the trolley increased the number of restaurants and businesses that they used on that particular day; 26% stated the trolley did not make any difference in the number of restaurants and businesses they used; and 1% stated the trolley decreased the number of restaurants and businesses they used. 97% of respondents stated the availability of the trolley makes the City a more desirable place to visit. 25% stated they would not have made the trip if the trolley was not available. 71% of riders were visitors to the City.

Visit Alexandria, whose mission is to increase spending in the City, distributes the official Alexandria Visitors Guide and Map on the trolley to expose riders to local businesses and attractions in the area, thereby increasing economic activity. Visit Alexandria is training trolley drivers to promote the City, helping riders know about stops and how to access places they want to go. Visit Alexandria promotes the trolley as part of its marketing plan to attract Alexandria's neighbors as well as visitors from a five hour drive radius. Riders can access trolley schedules and information at, a mobile-ready website.

The free trolley system improves Alexandria's attractiveness and accessibility for consumers to spend money at local businesses, generating tax revenue for the City which supports the quality of life for residents. With 20 stops for hopping on and off, the trolley increases access to shops, restaurants, attractions and all businesses found along Alexandria's historic main street. The trolley transports riders between the King Street Metrorail Station and the Potomac River waterfront daily from 11:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. every 15 minutes. With improved rider amenities and environmentally friendly features, the hybrid trolleys add even more appeal to King Street's acclaim as a "Top 10 Great Street" in the nation, named by the American Planning Association in 2011.

More about the Free King Street Trolley
The Free King Street Trolley service was first launched on April 1, 2008, and ridership has totaled more than two million. The trolley was an initiative recommended by the National Harbor Collaborative Task Force, a public-private consortium that recommended initiatives to attract visitors from National Harbor. The service serves as a vital transit connector to orient and disperse potential customers who access the City via water taxi, Metro, and Amtrak, and drivers who prefer to park once and access different areas of Old Town during their visit.
