Fireworks light up the night sky over the Potomac River at the Independence Fireworks at Mount Vernon event June 28-29, 2019, and the annual USA/Alexandria Birthday Celebration on July 13, 2019. The 42nd Annual Alexandria Jazz Festival returns this Memorial Day with a variety of talented musicians offering diverse styles of jazz, including U.S. Army Blues, VERONNEAU, David Kline Band and Good Shot Judy. Festival attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food will be available for purchase, or you can pack a picnic.

D-Day 75th Anniversary Commemoration

Commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day as the City of Alexandria celebrates American and French cultures and U.S. military history, in partnership with the Alexandria-Caen Sister Cities Committee. This year’s event will be held at the new Waterfront Park and features a commemoration ceremony with special guests. The program will also include WWII reenactors, a paint-and-sip station from Wine and Design (ticket required), history booths, a French market and wine garden, live 1940s swing music and dancers as well as a fife and drum corps. Children are encouraged to attend, and admission is free.

Panelists include Rear Admiral Tom Flynn, retired Judge Advocate General of the Navy; Dr. Kim Bernard Holien, retired U.S. Army Historian; and Brigadier General Tony Smith, U.S. Army, retired. Enjoy a patriotic evening filled with dazzling fireworks, mansion tours, musical performances and games on George Washington’s beloved estate. Fireworks begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. Greet General and Mrs. Washington in the historic area before trying your hand at bocce ball. Dust off your dancing shoes for 18th-century dancing demonstrations. Mount Vernon’s colonial artisans will reveal how 18th-century ice cream was made in the days before freezers. Visit Washington’s Tomb at night—this event is one of the few times this area is open in the evening—and watch sparks fly at the blacksmith shop. Concessions from the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant will also be available.

Join us for three days of Washington-inspired painting in the upper and lower gardens with renowned artist Simon Bull. During this first-ever event, watch visiting artist Simon Bull at work painting flowers, trees and scenes from the gardens on a mural-sized canvas. As you watch Bull use a brush and pour paint on the canvas, he will share his process and painting techniques and answer questions.

Port City’s annual Pub Crawl returns for the 6th time to the streets of Old Town. On Saturday, July 13, 2019, the Port City team will be stationed at local restaurants near the Alexandria waterfront, stamping pub crawl passes and handing out swag from 1:30-6 p.m. Enjoy Port City brews and food specials, and complete the Pub Crawl Pass to earn a limited-edition pint glass. In honor of Harry Potter’s birthday, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is offering family-friendly tours that explore the Muggle science and medicine behind J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series. Event partner Hooray for Books! will be selling wizarding merchandise on site, and Dolci Gelati will have Butterbeer gelato available in their shop. Activities include potion-making and a photo booth—don’t forget your camera. Tickets are available starting July 1, and advance purchase is recommended, as this event sells out. Children must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.

Friendship Firehouse Festival

The Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association (FVFEA) holds its annual Firehouse Festival each year on the first Saturday in August. The popular family event features antique fire apparatus, craft booths, displays by Alexandria merchants and live music. In addition to the day's outdoor events, festival participants will enjoy visiting the Friendship Firehouse Museum, originally built as a firehouse in 1855. The FVFEA is now a philanthropic organization focusing on fire-fighting history and fire safety. It remains active in community events, including the annual Festival and supports historic preservation of the building and its collection. Food and beverages are available. Children will receive free fire helmets and are treated to a supervised visit inside the City of Alexandria's fire trucks.
