Portside in Old Town Fall Happenings Include Continued Waterfront Beer Garden, Seaport Day, Outdoor Cinema and Portside History

Alexandria, VA—Alexandria’s new waterfront programming series, Portside in Old Town, kicked off with the Portside in Old Town Festival and continues throughout the fall with free-to-the-public themed happenings in history, art, music and fitness with activities for families and for adults, plus additional pop-up experiences and events. Don’t miss the continuation of the waterfrontbeer garden from Port City Brewing Company, the Alexandria Seaport Foundation’s Seaport Day festivities, the Alexandria Film Festival’s opening night on the waterfront, and five Saturdays of Portside History presented by the Office of Historic Alexandria with free hands-on activities and pop-up displays about Alexandria’s maritime history plus ticketed archaeology walking tours.

Due to extraordinary weather circumstances causing flooding that delayed construction of the new park space at the foot of King Street, some events will take place at Waterfront Park and the Alexandria City Marina. The new park space is expected to open later this fall. 

Portside programming continues in December with Portside Holidays,which will include pop-up happenings such as story time with Santa, a community sing-a-long, a hot chocolate bar, a Pacers holiday run meet-up, plus activities at major events such as the Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights, Waterskiing Santa show, and First Night Alexandria on New Year’s Eve.

2019 will bring more fun and photo-ops with a visit from the six-foot-tall Virginia is For Lovers LOVE letters in Februaryand a temporary interactive art installation from New York City studio SOFTlab in placeMarch through November. The biggest splash at the waterfront in 2019 will come from the tall ship Providence,arriving in June as a permanent attraction. Free, ongoing Portside in Old Town programming continues through 2019.

Alexandria’s Portside in Old Town series activates the Alexandria waterfront near King Street with free-to-the-public themed happenings in history, art, music and fitness with activities for families and for adults, plus additional pop-up experiences and events. Fall happenings include the Waterfront Beer Garden from Port City Brewing Company taking place the last two Saturdays in October (October 20 during Alexandria Seaport Day as well as on October 27); Alexandria Seaport Day on October 20 featuring live music, a boat show, boat building, children’s activities, beer and wine and an “Anything That Floats” Race; and the Alexandria Film Festival’s opening night on November 8, featuring a free outdoor screening of independent film shorts. The Office of Historic Alexandria presents Portside History every Saturday October 13 to November 17, with free hands-on activities and pop-up displays about Alexandria’s maritime history featuring weekly themes including archaeology, music, fashion and more. Register for Alexandria Archaeology’s ticketed waterfront walking tours on Saturdays or join a free Walking with Washington Tour on October 27 to explore important Old Town sites associated with George Washington. Portside Fitness features free group classes from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. with a Pilates class from Pilates ProWorks on October 21 and an Iron HITT class from Get Fit Studio on October 28.

This October, raise a glass on Alexandria’s waterfront with the Waterfront Beer Garden by Port City Brewing Company, part of the new Portside in Old Town programming series. Enjoy award-winning craft beer plus entertainment. In addition to classics like Optimal Wit, Port City will highlight different beers each weekend, including their beloved Oktoberfest, an IPA showcase, and the newest beer in their Lager Series, Baltic Porter. The beer garden joins the festivities of Seaport Day on October 20. October 27 features DJ G from 2 to 4 p.m., American Beer History Trivia from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and bites from Mia’s Italian Kitchen from 2 to 7 p.m.

Join the Alexandria Seaport Foundation's annual Seaport Day at Waterfront Park for a festival of live music, children's activities, a wooden boat display, nautical activities, lawn games and local food, beer and wine. Raise a glass at the Waterfront Beer Garden by Port City Brewing Company, part of the Portside in Old Town programming series. Indie rock band the DCeivers will entertain you as you enjoy bites from Mia's Italian Kitchen, Myron Mixon's Pitmaster BBQ, Blackwall Hitch and Fish Market. Take part in the “Anything That Floats” Race, sponsored by Chadwicks, and bring your water-going vessel made from nontraditional materials and then paddle, pedal or sail your way to the finish line (see official race rules online). The Alexandria Seaport Foundation's annual Seaport Day celebrates the city's maritime heritage and its mission/programs of improving the lives of young people through adult mentoring, project-based learning and the craft of wooden boat building.

October 20: Meet Alexandria’s Archaeologists! 
Learn about Alexandria’s early waterfront history and the latest information on the excavations of four 18th-century ships while you try your hand at rope making and other early Alexandria tasks. Activities will be led by Alexandria’s own City Archaeologists.

October 27: The Fashionable 18th-Century Alexandrian 
Could an American be patriotic and keep up with the latest fashion after the Revolution?  See the “latest” fashions and find out for yourself. Feel free to wear your own costume.

November 3: The Ship’s Company Chanteymen
Experience Alexandria’s maritime history through song! Join the Ship’s Company for nautical songs and hands-on maritime and navigation activities.

November 10: Honoring Our Veterans
Through the centuries, war brought changes and challenges to the waterfront. See archival documents and images highlighting everything from embargos to wartime industries as Alexandria commemorates the 100th Anniversary of WWI.

November 17: Preserving Ice   
Enjoy cold beverages? Do you love ice cream? Discover how Alexandrians preserved ice before the invention of home refrigerators.

Celebrate Archaeology Month with Alexandria Archaeology! As part of the Portside History series of activities at the Old Town waterfront, join an expert-led tour of the waterfront to learn more about the hidden history that has been revealed through excavation. The tour will start at the foot of King Street and end at Hotel Indigo with a nautically inspired drink crafted by Hummingbird Bar & Kitchen. Tickets are $20 per person with proceeds from the tour going to the Save our Ship conservation fund. Ticket price includes one drink. Pre-registration is required through Alexandriava.gov/Shop.  

Alexandria Film Festival Opening Night on the Waterfront

Gather at the Old Town Alexandria waterfront near King Street for opening night of the 12th Annual Alexandria Film Festival. This special Portside Cinema screening of independent short films kicks off the four-day film festival which features more than 70 free and ticketed films, screening at AMC Hoffman 22 Theater and Beatley Central Library. More than 60 filmmakers from around the world will present new films with numerous premieres and take questions and comments from audiences.
