Visit Alexandria Launches Virtual Reality Experience of the City, Announces Another Record Year at its Annual Meeting

$790 Million in Visitor Spending Generates $26.6 Million in Local Tax Receipts    

Alexandria, VA–Visit Alexandria announced a new immersive experience of Alexandria along with record visitor spending numbers at its annual meeting on September 25, 2017. Visit Alexandria 360 is a virtual reality tour that brings a new dimension to the Extraordinary Alexandria brand. It allows users to explore the city in 360° through or its mobile app that can be used with virtual reality headsets. The experience showcases more than 20 local attractions and allows users to step onto historic Captain’s Row, bike the Mount Vernon Trail, dine on King Street, take in the stunning waterfront vista at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, enjoy a boat cruise into D.C. and explore historic sites such as the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum. 

“360 and VR are increasingly what travelers are thirsting for,” said Patricia Washington, president and CEO of Visit Alexandria. “According to a 2017 study by Destination Analysts, more than half of travelers surveyed said they would be interested in using VR for travel inspiration. We are proud to be among the early adopters at the forefront of this new trend.”

Visit Alexandria also announced a 360 project aimed at increasing Alexandria’s visibility on Google. Visit Alexandria has organized a program for its member businesses, including restaurants, shops, attractions and hotels, to elevate their presence on Google through high-definition 360 imagery that integrates seamlessly with Google Maps and Google Streetview.

Reflecting on fiscal year 2017, Visit Alexandria shared that it had another banner year, noting record tourism revenues, local tax receipts, hotel occupancy, media coverage and web traffic. According to just-released figures from Virginia Tourism Corporation, $790 million in visitor spending produced $26.6 million in tax revenues for Alexandria. Travel also supported 6,450 jobs in Alexandria and saved each household more than $391 in taxes. Visit Alexandria announced these results:

  • 73% hotel occupancy (exceeding the national average of 65.6%)
  • 1,023 total press stories (+11%)
  • 1.94 million website visits to (+4%)
  • 110,000 social media followers (+29%)

As the region continues to evolve, Visit Alexandria announced that in fiscal year 2018 it will also focus on welcoming the National Science Foundation, promoting Alexandria as a hub for the burgeoning regional waterfront, introducing Fitzgerald Square as the focal point of the city’s expanded public waterfront, leverage new marketing partnerships with MGM and Amtrak, and capturing Alexandria’s share of the region’s projected $1.7 billion in increased visitor spending resulting from the 2017 IPW international trade show held in June 2017.
