In "Checks & Balances / Alexandra N. Sherman," the artist stumbled onto a cache of 1930's checks in an antique writing box and was inspired to make use of the printed engraving, beautiful handwriting from a bygone era, and stamps that marked their passage through the banking system in a series of collages. The Checks & Balances series is a reference to the foundation upon which our democratic society is built but also a response to our current political situation. The series explores the anxieties of living in an age of incredible political and environmental uncertainty, and the need to escape through flights of fancy and humor. Additionally, Alexandra Sherman's charming collages on vintage cancelled checks will be hung so both sides of the check can be seen.
Admission is free and gallery hours are Thursday-Friday from 12 to 4 pm.
This exhibition will run alongside "Water Works / Lisa Tuback, Suzanne Yurdin, Rhonda Smith" simultaneously.
