  • Details

On April 8, blast into outer space with the Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia (SONOVA)! Hear a lecture from a famous NASA scientist, listen to Gustav Holst's "The Planets," and travel through time and space with music from Star Trek. It's all part of SONOVA's signature event, our fifth annual gala and silent auction!

Our concert countdown starts at 6 p.m. with our silent auction. Come bid on a large variety of unique items, ranging from sporting event tickets to paintings to an African safari! While you browse, enjoy complimentary food and drinks, including heavy hors d'oeuvres, gourmet desserts, wine and non-alcoholic drinks.

At 7 p.m., we begin the concert with a special interactive lecture with famed NASA scientist Dr. Michelle Thaller and SONOVA's Maestro Jeffrey Dokken. Together, they will offer a unique look at Gustav Holst's epic suite, "The Planets," examining how the composer incorporated the astronomical and astrological aspects of Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune into his music. Dr. Thaller is the Deputy Director of Science for Communication at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. She is is one of the regular hosts of Discovery Science Channel’s “How the Universe Works,” and also hosts the podcast “Orbital Path” on public radio.

Then, take flight as you listen to Holst's epic seven-suite work, "The Planets", and hear the music that inspired great 20th century composers like John Williams. After a brief intermission, we close out the evening with a tour of music from Star Trek. Travel through time as we follow Star Trek from the classic 1960s TV show, to Star Trek: The Next Generation, to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, to Star Trek: Voyager, to 2009's Star Trek film and Star Trek: Beyond.
