OPENING IN LATE SUMMER 2019
Looking for a more serene option? Relax and enjoy an Evening Cruise on occasional Saturday evenings on the Providence. Feel rejuvenated as you take in the scenery with a glass in hand and a friend by your side. Mellow music will play while wind and waves carry you away from everyday life. A selection of beverages will be available for purchase along with light snacks.
The tall ship Providence provides a living link to our rich maritime, naval, and Revolutionary history. Our Providence is a replica of the first ship authorized to serve in the Continental Navy and John Paul Jones' first command.
Providence arrived in Alexandria on July 1, 2019, and will open to the public in late summer. Once open, we will welcome visitors aboard to see the ship, meet John Paul Jones, and get a taste of what life was like aboard an eighteenth-century sloop. In 2020 our Visitor Center will open near the base of King Street, where we will provide a dynamic and interactive experience. Our visitors will be pulled into the dilemmas that confronted our citizens and sailors, board the ship to meet John Paul Jones or another historic character and then learn about the birth of the U.S. Navy in a multimedia presentation!
