Portside in Old Town Fall Festival
Saturday, October 12, 2019
1 to 7 p.m. (Rain or Shine)
Waterfront Park (1 King St., Alexandria, VA)
Enjoy a day of maritime history, nautical demonstrations, live music and children’s activities on the Old Town Alexandria waterfront. Savor local food, beer and wine while experiencing boat building displays and a building demonstration from Alexandria Seaport Foundation Apprentices, knot tying from tall ship Providence and more. Explore Portside History from the Office of Historic Alexandria, highlighting the archaeological findings of 18th-century ships uncovered along the Old Town waterfront. Continuing Alexandria’s fall tradition of Seaport Day, select activities benefit the Alexandria Seaport Foundation’s mission to improve the lives of young people through adult mentoring, project-based learning and the craft of wooden boat building.
Boat Displays: Marvel at boats built by the Alexandria Seaport Foundation apprentices.
Portside History: The Office of Historic Alexandria will host several activities that highlight their growing understanding of the 18th century ships uncovered along Alexandria’s waterfront. Discover why a ship would be found in the ground with shoreline engineering. Test your archaeology skills by documenting a model of the ship remains with ship mapping. Try your hand at rope making the 18th century way using a mini rope machine.
Knot Tying: The tall ship Providence team invites you to learn the skill of knot tying and discover Alexandria’s newest waterfront attraction, a reproduction of the first ship authorized to serve in the Continental Navy and John Paul Jones’ first American command, opening to the public in the fall of 2019.
Anything that Floats Race ($): At 2:30 p.m., the Alexandria Seaport Foundation will host the Anything that Floats Race. Test your marine engineering and design skills in a race on the Potomac River or watch the fun for free. Awards will be presented for first place and most creative. The race is limited to 20 participants and advanced registration is recommended. Learn more
Make a Boat ($): Make your own model boat.
Paint a Boat: Stop by the painting station to add some color or painted designs to a portion of a boat.
Lawn Games: Head to the artificial turf for a game of horseshoe and cornhole.
Splash Golf ($): Practice your golf swing with Splash City Golf on the river’s edge using biodegradable fish food golf balls.
Mirror Mirror: Enjoy one of your last chances to view the interactive and sound-responsive public art installation created by SOFTlab through the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts and on display through November. During the day, step inside the 25-foot diameter, eight-foot tall art installation to be bathed in rainbow-hued light and pose for the perfect photo. As the festival comes to a close and the sun sets, dance, play and sing inside and around the artwork and enjoy the interactive light show.
